Setting the path for National Geoparks Committees - Arab Region

Online mode- August/ September 2021

UNESCO Cairo and UNESCO Montevideo are working together to promote and support the establishment of strong institutional foundations and national capacities for aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks in the Arab Region, Latin America and the Caribbean, and West African countries.  The online meetings organized on 25 August 2021  and 30 September 2021 brought together the Secretary-Generals of UNESCO National Commissions from all 19 Arab countries to present the GEOSCHEMAS project and initiate the establishment of the National Geopark Committees (NGC) in countries. On September 30, thirty-five (35) nominees came together to discuss the establishment of the NGC and to set the path for their programme of work.

Both meetings are organized in alignment with the development of UNESCO Global Geoparks Management Schemes in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Arab States (GEO-SCHEMAS). The GEO-SCHEMAS project funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) will foster an enabling environment for innovative thinking, sharing knowledge and experience and propelling creativity pulses; all within the UNESCO Global Geoparks.
