Empowering local Geopark communities in Latin America & the Caribbean, West Africa and the Arab States
The GEO-Schemas project aims at designing schemes to ensure the readiness of aspiring Geopark Sites in Latin American and the Caribbean, West – and North Africa (the Arab States) to join UNESCO Global Geopark Network. The ultimate goal of the project is to expand and strengthen LAC Global Geopark Network and to contribute to the establishment of the Arab and African Geopark Networks.
The project will support the designation of new aspiring Geopark sites in both regions. It aims to raise awareness on UNESCO Global Geopark Concept as mean for the conservation of geological resources among other natural resources through Community Based Integrated Management (CBIM).
The GEO-Schemas project will foster local development through the establishment of an enabling environment to ensure the viability and sustainability of both LAC and Arab and African UNESCO Global Geopark Networks. It will provide the foundations of regional and sub-regional hubs of knowledge including learning and training programmes on the designation of aspiring Geopark sites and on the effective management of geological heritage. The project will provide the ground for technology transfer and cooperation through sharing good practices on the conservation and sustainable management of geological resources, leveraging the livelihood of local communities and Geotourism. The GEO-Schemas project will increase the visibility of UNESCO Global Geopark concept and Networks in both regions and among national stakeholders from all sectors through Media, newspaper articles and publications as well as Digital Marketing.
The partnership between UNESCO and Spain to support the IGGP in Latin America and Caribbean Region is a key partnership, since Spain is a country with large experience in developing successful UGGp and shares the Spanish language with the most of the LAC countries. This has resulted in strong cooperation from UGGp in Spain with the Aspiring UGGp in LAC. Furthermore, UNESCO also collaborates with the 4 Spanish Cooperation Training Centres throughout Latin America and the Caribbean in capacity building activities and they would be good partners in the implementation of the project. These Cooperation Training Centres are located in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, La Antigua, Guatemala, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and Montevideo, Uruguay.
